How many times in your life have you stressed out over a decision or a commitment because your mind was convinced it needed to be a forever choice? Like if you didn’t get it right, or you changed your mind somewhere down the road you’d just be stuck.
For me the answer is ALL THE TIME! I used to dread making decisions. I was so afraid I’d make the wrong choice. I didn’t trust my gut. And I was convinced that the boyfriend, the college degree, the move, the job, the husband…all had to be FOREVER decisions. I know this is a common issue because I hear it from my coaching clients and friends all the time. Feeling “stuck” in a job you hate, a relationship that passed its expiration date way too long ago, or living in a place that no longer brings you joy. Totally convinced that this one path is the only one you are allowed in your life. Perhaps terrified of even contemplating the thought of making a different choice. Certain that your family, your friends, or society in general will shun you for being a failure or a quitter. Have you noticed how the only thing we celebrate about marriage is how long they last? Reaching those big milestones seems to be the ultimate prize ribbon. Yes, there are some couples who figure it out, who are able to grow and change together along the years. But sadly, I think there are a whole lot who reach that big 5-0 and secretly (or not so secretly) wish they’d made a different choice along the way. I see this with my schoolteacher friends, too. Staying in the job to reach that magical retirement year to collect the maximum benefits, but at what cost to their health and happiness? Sure, again there are some teachers who would gladly go to their graves teaching a spunky group of 8-year-olds…but I’m going to make an educated guess that those are the big exception to the rule. Have you ever thought to yourself, “Maybe in another lifetime”?? Like you are going to get another chance… Well, buckle your seatbelt, my friend because I have a MAJOR MIND SHIFTfor you! YOU CAN REINVENT YOURSELF AT ANY TIME. Nothing, not even this life you are living is FOREVER. Ask yourself what do I need FOR NOW? If you are in a place that makes you feel like you are slowly dying, if you feel like you have lost yourself, if you feel like this is just your lot in life – stop and ask yourself what do I really want? This is going to be scary. There’s no way around that. But just on the other side of fear is FREEDOM. I say this from years of experience in the realm of life reinvention. I’ve done it time and time again. Two divorces, at least 6 or 7 career changes, and a bunch of smaller life U-turns have led me to a place where I truly feel I have followed my dharma (my life’s purpose) and been true to myself in the process. Now I didn’t do it all perfectly and I spent A LOT of years ignoring my inner wisdom. But in the end, I took the leap and each and every time I found my wings. I’ve always loved the quote, “What if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you FLY?” It’s a choice. It’s FOR NOW and it’s FOR YOU. Are you ready to REINVENT your one precious life?
